So, apparently Disney is all in a huff about Miley Cyrus' photo shoot with world famous photographer, Annie Liebovitz. The complaint has been that the photo is too revealing.

Well, not seeing anything wrong with the photo, I wondered if I could find a comparable shot that Disney clearly does approve of.
Above, you can see a little comparison i did.

One of the scantily clad young ladies is presenting her chest to the world while the other has basically got her back to the camera.

This article from my local paper really scared me. I couldn't find the article online so I just scanned it in. For me, it paints a picture that even though we're out of the Apartheid era, there is still an obsession with race.

The gist of the article is that the "Forum of Black Journalists" (I don't see how in the Rainbow Nation we can have organizations specifying the race you have to be, but anyway) had President of the ANC, Jacob Zuma as the guest speaker.

The White journalists who were there, were escorted out.
When Yusuf Abramjee (a supposedly Muslim journalist who was allowed to stay) openly condemned the gathering, he was loudly heckled.

Then to top it off, Jacob Zuma (probably the future president of South Africa) said to journalists afterwards that he "saw nothing wrong" with the enforced colour bar.

This should not be tolerated in any country, let alone one that is constantly blowing its own trumpet about equality.

I'm disgusted.

Unlocked iPhone OTB 1.1.2

Hey hey it feels like Christmas!

So, I just managed to unlock my UK iPhone (OTB 1.1.2) finally!
It seemed like I had been waiting forever for this crack, but it's actually just been since November. THANKS GEOHOT!

Anyway, the process wasn't too bad if you know what you're doing - I didn't.
I got it right eventually, and that's why I'm writing this post, so it'll be easier for you!

My starting point was a jailbroken OTB 1.1.2 iPhone

1. I followed the iClarified tutorial.
My phone said "starting the unlock" then froze half way through and rebooted.
When it rebooted there was still no carrier listed in the top left corner.
So it looked like it didn't work!

2. Install bricktool.
I decided to follow this advice:
WHO EVER IS HAVING THE spinning wheel AND REBOOTING U HAVE TO: FOR ALL PEOPLE WHO ARE GETTING NO SERVICE after unlocker specially in OTB 1.1.3(modem:4.03 and bl=4.6) put bricktool files in USR/BIN OPEN TERMINAL IN PHONE AND USE THE FOLLOWING COMMMANDS AND RESTART THE PHONE
cd /usr/bin
chmod +x bricktool
bricktool d (after this command it will tell you PHONE PART ENABLED)
here we go for bricktool http://www.sendspace.com/file/e0tpu9 thats it.

My carrier showed up in the top left corner. My iPhone appeared to be unlocked and I did a little war dance around my room. But then I noticed it kept crashing when I tried calling.

3. Install iWorld
Then I discovered, if you live in a foreign country, you need to install iWorld and select your country from the list. Then, no more crashing!!

Going from my iPod to my new Nokia N70 for listening to MP3's is like going from driving a top of the range BMW to a FUCKING CART-HORSE!

And the fact that Nokia hasn't bothered to write any Mac drivers makes it kind of like the FUCKING WHEELS have been ripped off the cart and it's just kind of dragging along on the road! There are sparks flying everywhere and there's this god awful scraping sound coming from where the wheels should be and I'm sitting on the cart trying to ignore it and everyone's looking at me kinda funny.

Good going Nokia. You used to be THE cell phone company, now you're just churning out polished turds.

If it isn't enough that their economy is in the toilet (inflation at 1000%), the Mugabe regime in Zimbabwe is now committing human rights violations against anyone who dares to protest.

This is a video of some Zimbabweans attempting a peaceful protest and getting the shit beaten out of them by police.

What's frustrating and a little scary is that we here in South Africa are made fully aware of these atrocities being committed by Robert Mugabe. The media is constantly drawing attention to it, but our government does absolutely fuck all about it. Zimbabwe is our neighbour and since this has been going on, the most I have heard our government comment about it is that we are pursuing a "policy of quiet diplomacy" with Zimbabwe.

So, I wrote the entry below a while ago but never posted it.

Now I am posting it, because Nobel peace prize winner, Desmond Tutu has just come out publicly and said what's been on our minds for a while now: There is something wrong with South Africa.

I salute him for having the guts to stand up against a government that tells people who complain about crime to get used to it or get out. (South Africa Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi is rumoured to have said "Whites should stop complaining about crime and get used to it" in a speech recently)

So, a lot of people are against the idea of exposing South Africa's Shocking levels of violent crime as put forward by the site http://www.crimexposouthafrica.org/

I think the general consensus among these "proud South Africans" is that Niel Watson is being too negative and disruptive with his website and not positive enough. We all need to pull together and make South Africa a better place for all.

Well, the way I see it is we've tried that already, for the past decade.
And for the past decade violent crime has been getting worse and worse.
Drastic times call for drastic measures and what Niel is doing is shouting from the rooftops so that everyone will hear what's going on here. Is it a desperate tactic? definitely, but I believe it's high time for desperate tactics.

I just did a bit of research because I thought, hey, maybe violent crimes happen everywhere and we're just freaking out because http://www.crimexposouthafrica.org/ is showing gruesome photos of the crimes. So I googled "baby rape stats" to see what the stats are like internationally for this horrific crime.
Guess what?
The first whole page of results was to do with incidents that happened in South Africa. I couldn't actually find one incident of it happening anywhere else!

I think it's safe to say this website is not exaggerating, something is SERIOUSLY wrong with S.A. and the time to do something about it is NOW, and if it means drawing
international attention to it, so be it. The government must act.

Crime exposed in South Africa

So I did a post a couple of months ago that was a bit of rant about the South African Police and their lack of effectiveness and lately I've been getting even more distraught over the crime situation in South Africa.

It's getting bad, really bad. And what's worse is that noone seems to be doing anything about it, we're just sitting back and taking it. Well, until now at least. There's a new site that's just been launched that aims to expose the shockingly high level of crime in South Africa and hopefully scare/embarrass the government into actually getting off their butts and doing something about it.

The idea is that by exposing SA's high level of serious crime (20000 murders per year) on the internet, it will threaten our preciously guarded tourism industry as well as our international image which is being PIMPED at the moment in anticipation of the 2010 FIFA world cup. Up until now the rest of the world has not been getting the full story - they've just been fed the "Proudly South African" propaganda about us being a happy new democracy.

I'm definitely keeping my eye on crimexposouthafrica.co.za from now on.

I believe this is the future of activism and is our best chance at making South Africa a better place for all. (/patriotic chest thumping)

It's building up, I'm getting more and more pissed off with the DVD format by the day!

Studios are now so paranoid about piracy that they are alienating the people they should be cherishing the most - their customers.

I actually bought a DVD the other day (something I haven't done in a long time cos they're so overpriced and there's so much shit out there) and I was astounded at the user experience (or lack thereof) upon putting the DVD in my player.

The first thing I was greeted with was an anti-piracy advert which I couldn't skip. How fucking stupid are these studios?! I've just gone out and BOUGHT their DVD and they're lecturing me on the importance of not buying bootleg DVD's. And what's more - they're forcing me to watch it!

After waiting patiently through their propaganda, a whole lot of trailers start playing - again, I can't skip through them!
What is with these studios and forcing their customers to watch shit? All I wanted to do was get to the menu and start the movie.

Another irritating thing is that when you finally get to the menu it has to play this whole intro to the menu - which again you can't skip and have to wait for.

Finally,I was at the menu where it let me actually watch the movie - hallelujah. After watching the movie, I thought I might check out some of the extras and so I went back to the menu and lo and behold: not one fucking extra! Not even a measly trailer!

I thought this was the way rental DVD's were going, just having the movie and nothing else and if you want more you have to go and buy the DVD, but now store DVD's appear to be doing the same thing!

This wasn't a small straight-to-DVD movie either. It was Lord of War and wasn't cheap. (I know I should have probably checked the box to see what extras there were, but I was in a hurry and it was just a present for my mom.)

This is just one aspect of the dvd format that is pissing me off - stay tuned for more ranting.
Next week, how much my LG dvd recorder (at least, that's what it calls itself) sucks.

Superficial feed Surfing

I've realized that ever since I started using Netvibes as my home page my surfing habits have changed somewhat.

Instead of doing a deliberate search for something or even going to a specific site and reading through it, I'm scanning all my feeds, opening interesting ones up in new tabs and then reading each tab really, really quickly. This isn't even speed reading - its speed skimming. I'm pretty sure I'm missing a lot of the content but I think I'm usually picking up the gist of the article and this way I can get through more content in less time. Then, if I find something that interests me, instead of reading through it I save it to the hard drive for later reading - presumably when I'm bored.

So, in questioning this method I'm actually realizing that what I'm doing is just like reading the paper. You're not looking for anything specific, just keeping up with news.

I still get that feeling that I have to keep up with all the feeds though. Too much to keep up with!!! Don't know where to start... or end!!!

Anyway, I guess the answer is to just make mental notes of things I want to research and then set aside time for just that - and avoid the FEED DISTRACTIONS!!!!

I'm addicted to feeds.

I wonder, is it possible to be addicted to information? If so, I think I might be - at least addicted to the internet. Lately, if I don't get to check all the feeds of the blogs and sites I frequent, I feel like I'm not keeping up with shit. I feel a strong need to keep my ear to the ground or my finger on the pulse of tech or whatever. I always want to see what the next big thing or technology is going to be - or at least try to predict it.

If you too want to get addicted to the internet, go to Netvibes, set up an account and add some feeds (make sure you add http://del.icio.us/rss/popular) this is the shit. It's basically a list of the most popular bookmarks added to de.icio.us and why I like it is because I think most of the people who use delicious have definitely got their ears to the ground so I fell like I'm in good company.

I've noticed lately that I'll read something on the net and then a couple of days later I'll see the same story on cnn or something. Things are definitely changing. I think the net now comes out with new storys first and then tv news channels catch up a few days later. b.t.w, if these posts don't make much sense, its because I mostly write them late at night - basically, they're brain farts.

actually, I think I'm just writing this to keep track of my thoughts - so you can disregard most of it, it's not meant for public consumption.

Yup, it had to happen, I didn't think it would happen this soon, but maybe due to recent successful hacking exploits, Apple decided to let people install Windows XP on their new macs with intel chips. The software that's required is called Bootcamp and it will dynamically create two partitions on your intel mac and allow you to dual boot.

This is gonna make things very interesting from now on as more pc users will think about trying macs seeing that they get the best of both worlds. Now the only thing that could make it more interesting, is if Apple lets you install their operating system on pc's!

SAPS up again

mmm... ok the South Africa Police Service Site seems to be up again. Maybe they saw my post;)

Anyway, I was thinking about something else recently (CommandN talked about something very similar happening in London) which involves taking pictures of things and sending it to your police station to alert them. CommandN said you can now take pictures of Graffiti, rubbish and other stuff, email it (or send it with your phone) to the police service and they'll take care of it. AWESOME!!!

I was thinking the same thing while driving around town (Cape Town) and taking note of all the traffic violations that were happening. (about 1 a minute)

Imagine if you could send pictures of these violations to your traffic service and they follow it up with perhaps a warning or even a fine. And maybe, just maybe there could be some sort of incentive in it for YOU... like a share of the fine!

That would really get everyone behaving on the roads. Maybe you could even take videos of people speeding and they could figure out how fast the person was going from the markings on the road as the car travels over them.

I would definitely take this up as my second job. I would just drive around town the whole day taking pictures of taxis who make up traffic regulations as they go along.

South African Police Website Totally Busted!

After watching a TV show on the incompetence of the South African Police, I started wondering about the competence of other aspects of the Police force. So I logged onto their website (joking to myself that I'll probably be greeted by an out-dated web site with lots of dead links) and was astounded to find out that indeed half the website appears to be down!

When I tried to click on the Western Cape part of their map I got an error, then I tried clicking on the rest of the map and got errors. The whole of South Africa was an error!

I decided to complain and found a link on the front page labeled FEEDBACK stating:

"Interact with SAPS
Do you want to praise, complain, assist or talk to us? Click on this page:"

so I clicked on it - and guess what... nothing! I just got an error page!

You know that there's something HORRIBLY wrong when you can't even send an email to your NATIONAL POLICE FORCE!

I did manage to spot an email address near the bottom for crime stop in Gauteng, but that's like a thousand miles away from where I live.

then i dug a bit deeper in the website and managed to find the webmaster's email address - but then decided that it would be a waste of time emailing him because he probably hasn't figured email out yet.

I'm so disillusioned right now, I'm surprised I've actually written this far.

then for comparison I decided to check out the websites of another random third world country's police force to see how it compared. Maybe I was expecting too much from South Africa which is after all a third world country (that seems too be the most common excuse anyway) so I decided to try Argentina's Police Force website on for size. After about a minute I had found it (check it out for yourself: http://www.policiafederal.gov.ar/ ) and surprise surprise, it seemed to be in perfect working order with email address AND phone numbers clearly placed on the front page. This page was ten times more informative and it wasn't even in English!

So then I thought... why complain to the Police? Nothing will happen. Let me show the rest of the world (or at least the internet) and see what they think. Who knows, maybe you guys can even fire off an email or two to the (so-called) Webmaster of the South African Police Force (nortjew@saps.org.za) recommending a few improvements to their "site".

On a less pessimistic note... the reason why I went to the SA Police website in the first place, was because I had an idea about crime prevention using the internet, and I wanted to see if they had some sort of service where you could just fire off an email or something notifying the authorities of drag racing going on down your road (a daily occurrence) or really dodgy people walking around your neighborhood (an hourly occurrence). I think this is gonna make more sense as more and more people get online and less and less people are prepared to pay the exorbitant land line and cell phone prices.

We should be the police's eyes and ears on the ground, and attack crime in a distributed network type fashion. I bet if we all worked together we could almost totally eradicate crime. By the way, South Africa has got a SERIOUS crime problem. I live in what is considered one of the better suburbs in Cape Town and we live in a virtual prison scenario with layers and layers of security walls, laser beams, burglar bars, alarms and 24 hour private armed response patrols. And EVERYONE has high walls and electric sliding gates. And crime is still a big problem. I shudder to think how bad it must be in the townships.
